Flossmor | Hands-Free Floss Dispenser

Flossmor, the first hands-free floss dispenser. The collaboration of Dr. Bobby Lam and Rex Gabel R.D.H. two dental professionals with over 30 years of combined experience have created an innovative approach to flossing. We engaged in producing a product that can revolutionize the relationship people have with floss. A key component of dental professionals is to educated and inform. Flossmor gives us the opportunity to advance the message into action. We now have a physical device that can create an ongoing habit that will better the life of people around the globe. We believe Flossmor will change the landscape of oral health.

This product was modeled in 3ds Max 2014 and Rhinoceros 5 (NURBS and engineering surfaces), and rendered the various scenes with a mixture of V-Ray, Octane and Maxwell.

For the Flossmor floss dispenser design project I acted as industrial designer, creative problem solver, statistics and demographics researcher, rendering and lighting lead, and logo designer.

Habit forming, 24 hour reminder with gentle blue light.

Flossmor's active reminder will gently remind you to floss with a flashing blue bezel. The reminder will flash after 24 hours of non-usage. This environmental trigger will help create a positive behavioral change in flossing.

Design Challenges

Tip over resistance. A lower center of gravity keeps the housing stable.

Alerts to user sent via light messages. Error, reload, on, off and 24 hour reminder.

Ease of on and off function.

Capacitive touch button requires no pressure to activate and deactive device.

Slide resistance. Silicone footing add slide resistance, and resists sliding across smooth surfaces.

Ease of reloading floss cartridge.

Rear of housing opens to reveal floss cartridge.

Floss delivery triggered via infrared sensor, making device hands free.

Durable materials that add weight to device, and better sitting stability.

Non-sharp corners in the floss delivery area. Front of housing must keep the user protected from glove breakage.

Device must fit well in a medical office environment.

Flared footing to help the device gain space from other devices, and increase tip over resistance.
